When the Prayer List Is Longer Than the Day
By Chris Taff on September 9, 2026
I sat down this morning with my coffee and every intention of praying, and the list just kept growing. My boss goes in for open heart surgery today. My stepson Ty shipped off to the military yesterday. There’s the Mattering group I lead on Sundays, the pressure piling up at work, my own health and my wife’s, and that quiet ache of wanting to make things right with my sisters before more time slips by. The condition of our upside down world. By the time I got to “amen,” I wasn’t sure I’d said anything at all. I was just spent. Not doubting God, just worn all the way down, with more to carry than I know how to hold.
Scripture
“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” Matthew 11:28–30 (NIV)
How I Understand This Scripture
The way I read it, Jesus doesn’t say, “Hand me your list and I’ll clear it out by Friday.” He says, “Come to me.” A yoke is the wooden beam that joins two oxen so they pull together, one animal never carries the whole weight alone. So the rest He’s offering isn’t an empty schedule or a solved problem. It’s the promise that I’m not pulling any of this by myself. That’s how I hear it, anyway. He meets the weary not with a lecture about doing more, but with an invitation to lean in closer.
My Reflection
For most of my life I treated being tired like a sign something was wrong with my faith, like if I were praying right, I wouldn’t feel so emptied out. I’m learning late that being spent isn’t a failure. Even Elijah, right after one of the biggest moments of his life, sat down under a tree and asked God to just let him be done. And God didn’t scold him. He fed him and let him sleep.
So this morning I’m trying something different. Instead of one long, tangled worry, I’m handing things over one at a time. Tommy, into the surgeon’s hands and Yours. Ty, wherever the Army sends him. My sisters, and whatever it takes to close the distance between us. Our health. Sunday’s group. The job. Each one gets set down instead of stacked up. I don’t have to carry the whole weight to the end of the day. I just have to keep coming back to the One who shares the yoke.
I’m not looking for sympathy. I just know that there are other’s of you that may feel the same way today and you’re not alone.
A Prayer
Lord, I’m tired, and You already know it. I bring You Tommy today, steady the hands in that operating room and hold his family close while they wait. Watch over Ty as he steps into this new life; keep him safe and remind him he’s not far from You. Soften the ground between me and my sisters, and give me the humility to take the first step. Guard our health. Bless the group You’ve given me to lead. Help us recognize the evil in this world and rebuke it. And where I’ve been trying to pull it all alone, teach me to walk in step with You instead. I’m coming to You weary, just like You asked me to. Give me rest. Amen.
