Not Meant to Be Kept

There is a strange thing that can happen to a believer. We can receive the greatest gift ever given, the very Spirit of God living inside us, and then treat it like something to store in a drawer. We guard it. We enjoy it privately. We show up on Sunday, feel the warmth of it, and carry it home to keep for ourselves.

But the Holy Spirit was never given to be kept. He was given to be shared. And the more I sit with that, the more I realize a hoarded gift and a buried talent look an awful lot alike.

The Scripture

“But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” (Acts 1:8)

What Jesus Meant

These were among the last words Jesus spoke before He ascended. His followers wanted to know about timelines and kingdoms. He redirected them to something better. He told them power was coming, and He told them what it was for.

Notice the order. Power comes, and then witness follows. Jesus does not say you will receive the Spirit so you can feel good on the inside. He says you will receive power, and you will be My witnesses. The gift and the purpose are the same breath. The Spirit is not a private comfort that happens to be useful for sharing. He is a sending. The moment He comes in, He starts pointing outward.

And Jesus made the disciples a promise elsewhere that takes the pressure off the rest of us. He said do not worry about what to say, because the Holy Spirit will teach you in that very hour what you should say. The One who lives in you already knows the words. Our job is not to be clever. It is to be available.

My Reflection

If you have put your trust in Jesus Christ as your Savior, then this is not theory for you. The Holy Spirit already lives in you. You are not waiting for Him to arrive. He is here. The only question is whether we are keeping Him to ourselves or letting Him do what He came to do.

I think a lot of us stay quiet for one honest reason. We are afraid. Afraid we will say it wrong. Afraid of the question we cannot answer, the coworker who might roll their eyes, the family member who has heard it all before. So we keep the gift tucked away and tell ourselves we are just being respectful. But most of the time we are just being scared, and fear is a poor reason to sit on the best news a person could ever hear.

Here is what I keep learning. The Spirit grows the more you seek Him, not the more you protect Him. When you spend time with Him daily, in the Word, in prayer, in quiet, He fills you up in a way that does not stay contained. It spills. You start seeing the person in front of you differently. A conversation opens and, before you have figured out what to say, the right words are already there. That is not you being impressive. That is Him keeping His promise.

You do not have to have a seminary degree. You do not have to win a debate. A non believer does not need your arguments half as much as they need to see that something real lives in you. And when the moment comes, you will not be alone in it. The same Spirit who saved you will hand you the words. Your part is simply to open your mouth and trust Him to fill it.

A fire does not exist to warm one hand. A well is not dug for a single drink. What God has poured into you was always meant to reach someone else through you. So let it out. Seek Him in the morning, and watch who He puts in front of you by the afternoon.

A Prayer

Father,

Thank You for the gift of Your Holy Spirit, that You did not just forgive me and leave me, but that You came to live in me. Forgive me for the times I have kept that gift to myself out of fear or comfort or simple forgetfulness.

Fill me again as I seek You. Make what You have poured in me spill over onto the people around me. When the moment comes to speak, quiet my fear and give me the words, because I trust that You already know them.

Put someone in my path this week who needs what You have placed in me. And give me the courage to open my mouth and let You do the rest.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.
